10 favorite things to do / jerusalem / part 1 of 2

When you hear of visiting Jerusalem, two sequential thoughts come to mind: 1. That would be amazing experience seeing the scenic layout for biblical stories and 2. I wish I could go but it just seems too dangerous and sketchy over there. It is true that there is a conflict that has been waging on for many years and sometimes in certain areas it gets very dangerous. However, after living in Jerusalem for 3 ½ months I can say that the City of Jerusalem is safe enough to visit. There are thousands of tourists that have come from all over the world that visit year round. The Holy Land is no stranger to foreigners, and this does not exclude North Americans. If you are concerned about safety and the current status of the conflict you can always check to see if the BYU Jerusalem program is allowing students to go study in the Holy Land. They put in the due diligence needed to ensure parents of students that their precious ones will be safe. The security updates can be found here.

As I will be referencing them, I will explain a few things about the city.  Jerusalem is a large city; the western side is the Jewish side and has a very clean, new European feel to it. The east side is the Palestinian side and is a little more rundown with more of a third world feeling too it; this is due to the Palestinians being under occupation and not having the infrastructure needed to have a nicer part of the city. One of the best things about Jerusalem is that there are many sites and points of interest that are only a 10-20 minute walk away from each other. The Old City is the central part of Jerusalem and is the original geographical site of biblical Jerusalem.

The Old City is divided into quarters:

jerusalem-quarters.jpg
  • Muslim Quarter
  • Jewish Quarter
  • Armenian Quarter
  • Christian Quarter.

Another point of reference in the Old City is the different large gates that are the only entrances in.

It is very hard for me to narrow down must see places in the Holy Land, but I will offer some of my absolute favorite things to see and do in Jerusalem.

western wall.png

1. Western Wall

The Western Wall is also known as the Wailing Wall and is located in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.  It is located in the outer southwest corner of the Old City, you can access it through the city, but the easiest way to get there is to enter through Dung Gate. It is divided into male and female sections. Males have to wear a kippah (Yamaka) in order to go up to the wall; they have bins with kippahs you can borrow. This is one of the best places to visit during a Jewish Holiday because it is packed with various sects of Judaism with their differing religious garments and hats. Many people write prayers on small pieces of paper and then wedge them in the cracks of the wall. They clean the papers out every few months, so get it somewhere sneaky.

2. Monastery of St. Savior

Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City, this Monastery is one of my personal favorites. The artwork and decorations are very ornate and beautiful. There is an office where you can get times of services.

3. Dome of the Rock

The Dome of the Rock is the big golden Mosque that is the iconic building/image of Jerusalem. Along with the Al Aqsa mosque (Also found on the Temple Mount) the Dome of the Rock is one of the most Holy sites in Islam. The entrance is found just as you pass through Dung Gate in the southeast part of the Jewish Quarter right next to the entrance to the Western Wall. It is best to get there early in the morning, like 8:00am so that you don’t have to wait too long in line before entering the Temple mount to see the Dome of the Rock. There is no cost and no immediate time limit to your visit. They have a daily schedule for how long it is open to the public. The blue mosaic tiles of the Dome of the Rock are incredible. Only Muslims are allowed inside the Mosque.

4. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. It is the last sight of the Via Del Rosa. This church is one of two proclaimed sites of the Tomb Christ was buried in and rose from. This site is a must see. It is essentially a few large church structures blended together ran by the respective Christian sects. There are hundreds of thousands of people who make their pilgrimage there every year. The experience here is loud, crowded, and powerful. It was great to see so many people who have made many sacrifices to be there, come in and fall to their knees to worship the Savior. Aesthetically, it is very ornate in places and also very simple and beautiful in others. They have an early morning mass which is a great experience to be a part of.

5. Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb is located just north of the Old City outside of Damascus Gate. It is in the middle of busy streets with the sounds of traffic, honking, and yelling. However, there is an amazing phenomenon that occurs. When you step past the walls of the garden and into the tree covered paths with flowers all around you, the empty tomb, and very kind British volunteers running the garden all the sound of the city seems to be muted. You have to make an appointment with the people running the garden before you can enter and see the tomb. It is hit or miss with the crowds. I went there a total of four times and there were times I had to queue up to go into the tomb and other times where I sat in the tomb by myself for as long as I wanted. There is a stark contrast between this site and the site in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, but both are enriching and powerful.

stay tuned for the second half next week!

six (cheap) gifts for surfers

shopping for boys is confusing. usually they only want things that they need and use, nothing superfluous like the many accessories and things that girls always want. maybe that's why they don't carry purses, they don't need to lug around excessive amounts of stuff 'just in case.' i find myself buying the same things for every holiday: new work shirts, new shoes to replace the ones that have been worn out, moleskin notebooks. i've tried to get creative and get things like watches, but ultimately they go unworn (except by me) and i just get angry. so from here on out i'm going to try to stick with the list, and get only things that jarman needs and uses on a regular basis. now that we are moving to california (for good! and in less than 2 weeks!), surf gear can finally be on the list.

there are just a few things that surfers have to have. board and wet suits are obviously the more expensive items that can only be given every so often. the items below are things that surfers will always need/use, making them easy to shop for.

{this list was curated by jarman}

1. wetsuit top ($89.99)

2. bodysurfing fins ($76)

3. surfboard repair kit( $12.86)

4. Booties ($44.95)

5. leash ($20-75)

6. wax ($4.95)

how to create the perfect stocking / for her

i don't know about you, but stockings have always been my favorite part of christmas. i'm not sure what it is about them that makes me so happy, but they do. the best things come in small packages right? and stockings are full of small packages. i know everyone does stockings/christmas morning differently. for us, we all had to wait to go down together. we would go down and see the bigger present that santa left out for us, and then could open the stockings all at the same time. most of the gifts in the stocking would be wrapped, which made opening them that much more fun. then we would show everyone what we got, and proceed youngest to oldest to open the rest of the presents.

our stockings were where the money was at. we always got the best stuff in them. i love them so much that i have even made the deal with jarman that on top of christmas presents we would get each other filled stockings, in addition to the ones from our families. we really like to spoil ourselves. jarman pulled out the big guns last year and had my entire stocking filled with stuff from anthro, it's gonna be a tough act to beat. here is the way that i think stockings should be filled.

1. Winter Accessories- Scarf ($39.95) i love the instant gratification of the getting something in the stocking and being able to wear it through the rest of the present opening. it could be a scarf (like this adorable pink fur), a hat, gloves, etc. it'll keep you warm on christmas morning and throughout the winter.

2. Candy- See's Candies (around $17.50) stockings should always be filled with candies. we almost always got see's candies, and would hide them from each other and eat them slowly over the next few weeks. hoarders to say the least. any kind of candy will do though. actually, any kind of chocolate.

3. Jewelry- Earrings ($38) this is another must. small packages usually means jewelry. jewelry always means happiness.

4. Make-up- Mac Holiday Lipstick Set ($39.50) for some reason i feel like make-up is an obvious thing to put in stockings because we almost always get the new mac sets. it should be a fun item- like glitter or gold eyeliner though, just to make it super holiday appropriate.

5. Socks or Undies- JCrew Socks ($16.50) for some reason almost every year we get underwear in our stockings. then when my dad was videoing us asking us what we got, we would get really awkward and embarrassed and he would always say something about it to make us blush even more. it's kind of a tradition. socks are fun too though.

6. Books- Italian Phrasebook (7.84) last christmas my mother-in-law got me and my sister-in-law the cutest little french guidebooks and phrasebooks. i think they should be in every stocking. this is a go-to for jarman too.

7. Fun Fillers- Jeweled Keychain Purse ($18) there are so many other fun mini-thing that stockings can be filled with. i love these little keychains.

8. Movies- The Great Gatsby ($19.95) movies are must, and then you should probably have a movie marathon of every movie you got that day. that's pretty much what happens in the carpenter house.

christmas / last year's holiday decor

i got my camera for christmas last year and immediately started snapping photos, while reading the manual and trying to figure out all of the cool things i could do with it. i laid on the couch and took about 20 different pictures of the mantle just so i could see how each setting changed what the picture looked like. it was super fun, but they are definitely not the greatest pictures i've ever taken (hopefully i've improved over the past year!). i still want to share them with you because i think bobette did/does such a good job of decorating the house every christmas. she decks the halls like it's nobody's business. here are a few parts of the house that i have pictures of:

first up, the mantle. i think our brick fireplace screams christmas, so it didn't need much. bobette went with simple stockings and adorned them with the first letters of our names, and glitter silhouettes of our faces. yes, she made little glitter silhouettes of each of us. if that doesn't impress you i don't know what will. she added a few modern christmas trees and reindeer, along with some evergreen garland. near the fireplace are two smaller 'christmas trees'- one made of a pretty branch, and one that had christmas cards from our friends hung on it. on the other side she had two large lanterns filled with birds and moss.

i know, that's a really crappy picture of the tree and it doesn't even show the cute presents wrapped underneath. this was post-christmas morning so all of those wrappings had been torn to pieces, wrestled in, and then thrown away. such is life. last year the tree had silver and blue ornaments with pink bows mixed in. and a crown as the tree topper. fitting for a family with 5 girls who all think they are princesses. i did get a few shots of some of the cutest ornaments, as i was playing with my macro settings.

these are the only other two places of the house that i got to photograph, though there was so much more going on. the first picture shows our 'hot chocolate station,' with all of the fixings to make delicious hot chocolate at any time of day. the second shows the mini-christmas tree collection which have been used in many ways over the years. they started out in each of our rooms- we each got our own mini tree decorated with things that fit our personalities (mine had an eiffel tower, cateye glasses, pearls, etc). last year they were in a grouping in the living room, and had the cutest pink and blue ornaments.

be sure to look out for our post of this year's christmas decor!

six (cheap) gifts for little princesses

creating this post almost killed me of cuteness. i had to make some tough decisions on how to narrow this gift guide down to only six things. can i do a post on baby shoes? there are seriously so many cute ones out there.

1. gold polka dot dress ($14.99) obviously we have to start with a princess dress. this gold polka dotted one is the perfect party dress for any little girl, and will look great for all of her holiday events.

2. bow coat ($49.95) let's talk outwear. it's gonna be cold, and baby's gotta stay warm and look awesome (and not be shoved in the corner). this is the most adorable jacket ever and the classic camel color will accent all of her outfits.

3. red bow shoes ($29) i am imagining the first three items together in an outfit, obviously. these shoes give the perfect pop of christmas red, and a nice contrasting pattern. and they are stuart weitzman, are you kidding me?

4. kardboard kingdom ($79) i had to put some sort of toy in, something that babies will actually enjoy. this mini palace would be so exciting to wake up to on christmas morning. what's even better is they can decorate it themselves (with the help of their older siblings of course)! (ps. i know cardboard is spelled wrong, and it bugs me too. it's what the folks over at the land of nod decided on, sorr.)

5. crown sweatshirt ($12.95) when baby wants to be a little more casual, but still wants to assert that the kingdom is officially hers, she can throw on this little sweatshirt with a gold crown. dying.

6. Jane Eyre Baby Book ($8.99) i had to include this for a few reasons: one, these baby books are my favorite and probably the first thing i will buy for my babies; two, all princesses are well-learned; and three, jane eyre was the ultimate princess. learning how to count is fun too.

treat all your little princesses right this christmas! you wouldn't want to be banished from their kingdoms!
